In the Word – Intentional Bible Study Series Do a topical study (see some links below). After reading the selected passages for the day, choose 1-2 verses to study and begin!ģ. Use any Bible reading plan of your choice (see lots of links below). Choose a book of the Bible to study through and simply read a chapter a day.Ģ. Now that you understand how to use the SOAP Bible study method, let’s talk about some ideas for selecting passages of Scripture to read and study:ġ. P – Prayer: Write down a prayer about the truths in this Scripture asking God to help you apply it to your life. What is God trying to say?Ī – Application: Personalize what you just read by asking yourself how it applies to my life right now. O – Observation: Write down observations about the Scripture you just read. ![]() You will use these verses for your focused SOAP study and record your observations, applications, and a prayer. S – Scripture: Choose 1-2 verses from the Bible passage read, record the reference and then copy the verses down. But before we get into selecting Bible passages to study, let me explain about how to use the SOAP method of Bible study: How to Use the SOAP Method of Bible Study You can either create this on your own or find some schedules already done on the internet. To begin, you need to select the passages of Scripture that you want to study. I often see how God answered my prayers or things that I still need to work on.I have really benefited from my Bible study time using the SOAP method and decided to create a journal that you can use to record your thoughts as you study the Bible using this method. There have been times that I even like to go back and look at past SOAPs. Let Him know how you felt or what you took away from the other three sections of the SOAP bible study method. (However, don’t hesitate to write down anything else that is on your mind on that day.) You may not be used to writing out your prayers, but consider it as a letter to God. This is the time to write down anything that you need God to help you with, particularly as it pertains to the text. I encourage you not to hold back on this step. Prayer – Prayer is simply communication with God. What is one thing that I can do today as it applies to this text? You may even want to re-read the scripture, look at your observations, then ask “How does the scripture apply to me?” You might also write down your first initial thoughts and feelings to this biblical text? Other questions you might ask include:ĭoes this text confirm current actions that I am taking or having? However, when I am using SOAP, I typically just stick with the Bible for the O section and ask the Holy Spirit to guide me in it.Īpplication – Now, it’s time to make it personal. Some people may choose to go a deep further in their observation with commentary and other biblical resources. Or, maybe there was something that wasn’t said. For observation, you may also want to note any words that speak to you. You want to see what God is saying or what the author is trying to convey. ![]() The first goal is to look at the text objectively. ![]() Observation – This element of the SOAP bible study method is all about what is presented in front of you. But, some of my other favorites include: New Living Translation, EASY, Amplified Version, and The Message. You may find it helpful to write down the translation as well on your paper. ![]() So, oftentimes now I like to read the NKJV for familiar scriptures. I grew up in church that utilized the King James Version. Scripture – To complete the S in Soap, you will want to write the scripture in a bible translation that you are accustomed to. ![]()
